Using the U-PROX Desktop USB reader to work with FortNet software

As “FortNet” integrated an older 2016-release modification of the U-Prox Desktop USB reader that used a COM-port speed of 2400 bps—and provided no support for our newer USB devices (which use 9600 bps)—we released special firmware editions (at user request) to enable their use with FortNet.

To operate current U-Prox Desktop USB readers in FortNet, you must load them with the special 2400 bps firmware versions. Configuration differs slightly between USB reader modifications:

  • mod.1 (GID 00:32:00:….)
  • mod.2 (GID 00:4E:FE:….)

The GID is printed on the back or can be read via the COM port (see “RS232Proto_3_ua.pdf”).

All necessary information is in the firmware archive on our website under Downloads → Software & Manuals. See the top-level ReadMe.txt for an overview and recommendations, and the U-Prox_Desktop-fortnet subfolder in the FirmwareReaders archive for detailed instructions.

Refer to “ReadMe_to_fortnet.txt” and “Update_firmware_UProxDesktop.pdf” for the exact firmware-update procedure.

  • For U-Prox Desktop mod.1 – firmware file:
    Subfolder “FortNet – desktop_new_mod.1 GID 003200” → ble742.bin
  • For U-Prox Desktop mod.2 – firmware file plus additional steps:
    Subfolder “FortNet – desktop_new_mod.2 GID 004EFE” → desktop_v33.33.bin
Via a console (e.g., PuTTY), set the reader to binary mode (bb command)—see “RS232Proto_3_ua.pdf” for details.

The PuTTY program (https://www.putty.org/) can be downloaded from that page.
You can also use the U-Prox Desktop USB reader as a “virtual keyboard” with any software, without changing its standard firmware – see the “Using the U-Prox Desktop USB reader as a virtual keyboard” page on the website.
