In conventional identifiers (such as Em-Marine), the code is open and easy to copy, since there is no encryption. This makes them vulnerable to cloning, which is critical for ACS security. Mifare Classic cards also have critical vulnerabilities and backdoors from unscrupulous manufacturers, which makes it easy to hack such cards and copy data from the encrypted internal memory.
An alternative is Mifare Plus and Mifare DESFire, which operate at 13.56 MHz and have internal memory with duplication protection. Mifare Plus cards in SL3 or Mifare DESFire mode use strong AES encryption, so it is currently impossible to copy their data without knowing the encryption password.
Readers that are configured to work with encrypted Mifare Plus and Mifare DESFire will only “recognize” authorized cards. The user data stored in a separate encrypted memory area is used as an identifier.
To issue (encrypt) secure cards, our engineers recommend using a special U-PROX Desktop reader and the U-PROX Config smartphone application. The same Mifare parameters are configured and saved in the U-PROX Desktop and U-PROX SL/U-PROX SE series readers. Then, using U-PROX Desktop, the cards are encrypted and their new identifiers are entered into the ACS.
The configured readers of the U-PROX SL/U-PROX SE series will read only encrypted Mifare cards with your unique password and support smartphones as electronic passes, and the access control system will work exclusively with secure identifiers.

An access control and management system (ACS) is a set of hardware and software tools designed to regulate the entry and exit of personnel, identify individuals, and record events. The main purpose of the ACS is to ensure facility security by controlling access to premises and keeping track of people at the enterprise.
Depending on the size and complexity of the facility, stand-alone or networked solutions are used.
Standalone systems are best suited for small facilities, usually for single door control. Such a system does not require a local or cloud server for configuration, and access rights information is stored directly in the controller.
Standalone systems are easy to install and maintain, but have limited functionality and basic access levels. They do not provide event monitoring, reports, centralized management of identifiers and access rules. To configure such controllers, you need to visit the facility and be physically present at the site.
Network access control systems, in turn, are more complex solutions that run specialized software on a central server or cloud platform. Such ACSs allow you to manage multiple access points, remotely change settings, maintain centralized registration, generate reports, analyze events, and generate time sheets.
Regardless of the type of ACS, the first thing that meets a person at the entrance is the readers, which are directly related to the type of identifiers used.
Readers are responsible for transmitting information from the identifier to the access controller to make a decision and record the event and then to the server. They can support different types of identification:
RFID cards and key fobs are the most common types of identifiers that work using radio frequency identification.
Secure identifiers Mifare Desire, Mifare Plus, Mifare Classic – allow you to protect against card cloning and substitution. They also include bank cards.
After receiving information from the reader, the controller independently decides to grant or deny access according to the access rules and identifiers loaded into it and controls the actuator: an electric lock or turnstile, gate, barrier.

The controller supports one external reader from the U-PROX SL or SE line, which must be equipped with the controller and contains a built-in capacitive output request button, which, together with all standard inputs and outputs, forms the necessary set for controlling the electric lock of a one-way access point.
The controller’s communicator is implemented on WiFi, which allows for high installation flexibility, especially when scaling existing U-PROX systems and renovating old ACSs when there are no free ports in switches, it is impossible or too expensive to lay cables. In the event of a network outage, the controller can store the downloaded access rules and event log locally and continue to control the lock offline.
Centralized management of the controller network is provided by both the classic U-PROX IP/WEB server system and the U-PROX ACS Cloud solution. Both platforms allow you to manage access policies and receive analytics from anywhere in the world, and network controllers allow you to deploy a flexible architecture. The Basis School in Kyiv is a private research school specializing in the natural sciences (physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology) and advanced English language learning. The old access control system did not meet the needs of the school and did not fulfill its functions. In search of a comprehensive solution capable of integrating with the educational process management system, Basis’ technical specialists turned to U-PROX.

After analyzing the technical specifications, our engineers proposed a solution based on U-PROX IP software, IP 400 controllers and SE Slim readers, as well as the integration of third-party face recognition terminals. It should be noted that an important factor for the customer was the availability of an API in the access control system for integration with their own MyBasis learning management platform.
The integration and installation process involved the complete replacement of controllers and some readers, as well as the installation of a face recognition terminal at the entrance. Thanks to the experience of working with our equipment, the integrator company completed the installation and configuration extremely quickly, meeting the deadline before the start of the school year.
The U-PROX access control system now controls the entrance to the school, access to the building, and elevator calls. It is integrated with the fire alarm system, which allows you to unlock the doors in case of fire, and our burglar alarm system, which transmits the status to the door access control system to monitor their condition using wireless reed switches and relays.
From now on, when a student enters the school for the first time, the system marks him or her, and the event of successful entry is sent to the school management system. The attendance record is then entered into the school’s electronic journal. Thus, students who have not entered the school are automatically marked as absent. At the same time, if a student enters the school, the teacher sees him or her in the journal. The system also has the ability to inform parents about a student’s entry to the school.
Another successfully optimized process is the report on the number of children who have arrived, which is sent to the kitchen to prepare delicious lunches. At the same time, this allows the kitchen staff to understand who exactly is present on the school grounds. To check in, a student just needs to put his or her bracelet against the U-PROX Desktop reader, which has also been integrated into the school management system.
