An access control and management system (ACS) is a set of hardware and software tools designed to regulate the entry and exit of personnel, identify individuals, and record events. The main purpose of the ACS is to ensure facility security by controlling access to premises and keeping track of people at the enterprise.
Depending on the size and complexity of the facility, stand-alone or network solutions are used.
A standalone access control system operates independently of the central server and is best suited for small facilities, usually for single door control. In such systems, information about access rights is stored directly in the controller. Stand-alone systems are easy to install and maintain, but have limited functionality and elementary access levels, do not provide for centralized event monitoring and remote uploading of identifiers and access rules.
In turn, network access control systems are more complex solutions that run specialized software on a central server or cloud platform. Such ACSs allow you to manage multiple access points, remotely change settings, maintain centralized registration, generate reports, analyze events, and generate time sheets.
Regardless of the type of ACS, the first thing that meets a person at the entrance is the readers, which are directly related to the type of identifiers used.
Readers are responsible for transmitting information from the identifier to the access controller to make a decision and record the event and then to the server. They can support different types of identification:
RFID cards and key fobs are the most common types of identifiers that work using radio frequency identification. They also include bank cards
smartphones (via Bluetooth, NFC transport channels) – a modern technology that has gained immense popularity due to its ease of use and mass appeal. There are more than 7 billion smartphones in the world today!
biometric terminals – identification by fingerprints, palm vessels, iris or face recognition code keyboards – entering a digital code to gain access
optical QR code scanners – used in mass events or as guest one-time identifiers.
After receiving information from the reader, the controller independently decides to grant or deny access according to the access rules and identifiers loaded into it and controls the actuating device: an electric lock or turnstile, gate, barrier.
Connection to the actuators is made via a relay or relay module of the controller.
Proper connection and high-quality ACS components ensure stable and reliable operation of the system.

Modern network (IP) access controllers are an effective solution for providing centralized control and security at facilities for various purposes, from small offices to large production complexes, logistics hubs, and branched corporate enterprises. The controllers provide user authorization, event monitoring, and integration with other systems via a network connection.
U-PROX offers an innovative single-door controller IP401 in its ACS lineup. It is the embodiment of modern design with a tempered glass surface and effective cost of functionality.
The controller supports one external reader from the U-PROX SL or SE line, which must be equipped with the controller, contains a built-in capacitive output request button, which, together with all standard inputs and outputs, forms the necessary set for controlling the electric lock of a one-way access point.
The controller’s communicator is implemented on WiFi, which allows for high installation flexibility, especially when scaling existing U-PROX systems and renovating old ACSs when there are no free ports in switches, it is impossible or too expensive to lay cables. In the event of a network outage, the controller can store the downloaded access rules and event log locally and continue to control the lock offline.
Centralized management of the controller network is provided by both the classic U-PROX IP/WEB server system and the U-PROX ACS Cloud solution. Both platforms allow you to manage access policies and receive analytics from anywhere in the world, and network controllers allow you to deploy a flexible architecture. Combining them, you can create a multi-level structure with distributed responsibility and centralized monitoring.
The U-PROX ACS Cloud opens up another industry for the IP401 controller: rental housing. The cloud-based solution allows owners or their administrators to remotely grant access to guests for a certain period of time using mobile IDs for smartphones, which are read by U-PROX readers.

The Basis School in Kyiv is a private research school specializing in the natural sciences (physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology) and advanced English language learning. Founded in 2018, the school quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading educational institutions, ranking first among Kyiv schools in terms of NMT results.
The old access control system did not meet the needs of the school and did not fulfill its functions. In search of a comprehensive solution capable of integrating with the educational process management system, Basis’ technical specialists turned to U-PROX.
The client chose our equipment due to the recommendations, manufacturer’s reputation and high quality of products. To implement our ACS, the client chose an experienced integrator with extensive experience in implementing integrated security solutions using U-PROX equipment.
After analyzing the technical specifications, our engineers proposed a solution based on U-PROX IP software, IP 400 controllers and SE Slim readers, as well as the integration of third-party face recognition terminals. It should be noted that an important factor for the customer was the availability of an API in the access control system for integration with their own MyBasis learning management platform.
The integration and installation process involved the complete replacement of controllers and some readers, as well as the installation of a face recognition terminal at the entrance. Thanks to the experience of working with our equipment, the integrator company completed the installation and configuration extremely quickly, meeting the deadline before the start of the school year.
The U-PROX access control system now controls the entrance to the school, access to the building, and elevator calls. It is integrated with the fire alarm system, which allows you to unlock the doors in case of fire, and our burglar alarm system, which transmits the status to the door access control system to monitor their condition using wireless reed switches and relays.
From now on, when a student enters the school for the first time, the system marks him or her, and the event of successful entry is sent to the school management system. The attendance record is then entered into the school’s electronic journal. Thus, students who have not entered the school are automatically marked as absent. At the same time, if a student enters the school, the teacher sees him or her in the journal. The system also has the ability to inform parents about a student’s entry to the school.
Another successfully optimized process is the report on the number of children who have arrived, which is sent to the kitchen to prepare delicious lunches. At the same time, this allows the kitchen staff to understand who exactly is present on the school grounds. To check in, a student just needs to put his or her bracelet against the U-PROX Desktop reader, which has also been integrated into the school management system.
Thus, by installing the U-PROX ACS, the Basis school received a reliable and flexible access control system that is perfectly integrated into the school’s management processes. Our system has become an invisible assistant that provides a high level of safety and comfort for its students and staff.
